Guided Reading at Oak Lodge

At Oak Lodge School, our Guided Reading practice is uniquely designed to make reading accessible, meaningful, and enjoyable for our students, many of whom are learning English as a second language. We provide structured, timetabled reading sessions in one-to-one or small-group settings at least two to three times a week, focusing on bridging both English and BSL. Using a careful selection of factual books, including Big Cat, PM, and Raintree reading schemes, we ensure students progress at their own pace while developing essential comprehension skills. Our approach integrates Visual Phonics to support decoding, alongside Blanks and Blooms Higher-Level Reasoning questions to enhance metalinguistic awareness and world knowledge. This bespoke approach fosters confidence, independence, and a love for reading, ensuring students develop vital literacy skills for life.
