At Oak Lodge School, staff are supported in their professional growth through a variety of roles and responsibilities. Over the years, team members have progressed from general Teaching Assistant (TA) positions to specialised roles, including unqualified teaching roles, qualified teaching positions, and leadership roles. The school also offers opportunities for staff to train as Teachers of the Deaf (ToD) and take on further responsibilities.
This progression is made possible through the school's commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and the funding provided to support further education. With expertise across various fields and specialist qualifications like the Postgraduate Diploma in Deaf Education (ToD), staff are well-prepared to incorporate the latest research into classroom practices. Native users of British Sign Language (BSL) are able to engage directly with students in their primary language, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Oak Lodge School also provides comprehensive mentoring programs for Early Career Teachers (ECT) and Teachers of the Deaf (ToD), ensuring that staff receive guidance and support throughout their professional journeys.
Teaching Pathways
At OLS, there are two teaching pathways available. Our teacher training team can assist you in determining which route is most suitable for your individual situation:
- QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) Route
Wandle Alliance Teaching Hub: This is a 1-year course based at OLS for your teaching placement, requiring a degree to apply. The course offers both secondary (subject-specific) and primary teaching routes, with further consultation available through the teacher training team. The program will lead to a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) linked to a university, depending on the course. Upon completion, you will join a 2-year Early Career Teacher (ECT) program to become a fully qualified teacher (QTS). - QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) Route
You will need to complete a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) course at OLS, with support from the teacher training team. After this 1-year course, you can join the Society for Education and Training (SET) to pursue the QTLS qualification over 6 months. Upon completion, you will earn QTLS.
