Health: Emotional and Physical

The bespoke Emotions curriculum, Physical Education, and Food Technology programmes ensure that Oak Lodge has an excellent provision which supports and promotes all students understanding of how to keep themselves healthy. Below is an overview of how we address the individual needs of our students in these key areas:

How we support and promote our students’ Physical Health: Exercise and Healthy eating

  • All pupils at Oak Lodge exceed the Governments minimum time for PE and opportunities for participating in additional physical activity happen in the Sensory Start Programme, Enrichment and the Afterschool Club Programme. As well as Residential Trips led by the PE department.
  • All pupils examine the importance of keeping fit and how it benefits their health. They will test their own levels of fitness then participate in circuit training then re test their levels. The PE programme further develops pupils understanding of Health with KS4 pupils through the qualifications on offer: GCSE PE short Course, Entry Level PE Sports Leaders 1 qualification.
  • As well as 100% of pupils participating in a variety of sports competitions throughout the academic year, pupils in KS4 & 5 also attend a variety of local leisure centres to support them to continue to participate in physical activity when they leave school.
  • Swimming: pupils are provided with opportunities to swim during the afterschool club which is led by an Ex pupil
  • Awarded Silver Sports Mark 2014-2015 award for our commitment, engagement and deliver of competitive school sport.

Enrichment and Afterschool Clubs: As part of these weekly programmes students have the opportunity to engage and participate in a range of physical activities further promoting their understanding of the importance of physical health. Activities include:

From a recent survey 100% of pupils enjoy participating in the variety of Enrichment and Afterschool Clubs

  • Food Technology Curriculum: Pupils learn the importance of health and safety in the kitchen and any working environment as well as the importance of a healthy diet. They learn about healthy food and how to prepare and cook food based on healthy ingredients according to the Food Pyramid. Pupils learn about the origins of food and natural environments and where types of food are grown.
  • School Meals:
    • All meals are warm and made on the premises. They meet the cultural and medical needs of all our pupils. The menu is changed regularly and on special cultural days will make food which supports and promotes our students to understand cultural diversity.
    • Pupils are actively promoted to engage in making the decision as to what they will eat in the coming week by selecting from the options on Monday mornings.
    • Healthy Breakfast every morning before school to ensure pupils have a nutritious start to the day and to support them to develop good eating habits
  • Meals are a community affair with all pupils sitting at different tables in mixed age groups. Each table has a lead pupil. The older students mentor the younger ones, encouraging them to try different foods, demonstrating the expected manners and eating habits.

How we support and promote our students’ Emotional Health

This bespoke curriculum was originally designed specifically for deaf young people. However, it is suitable for any child, adolescent or adult with delays in understanding other peoples’ perspective, delays in consequential thinking and limited emotional understanding and regulation. weekly lessons for all pupils years 7-6th Form The Emotions curriculum comprises 9 modules, taught in sequential order, which enable the learners to:

  • recognise, name and express a wide range of emotions,
  • reflect on their own and others’ emotions
  • develop empathy
  • learn how to manage thoughts, feelings and behaviour
  • build self-esteem
  • develop social skills
  • form and maintain relationships
  • problem solve
  • resolve conflict
  • 100% of identified pupils with specific needs received appropriate intervention in house or are referred to outside agencies.
  • 326 individual learning provisions were in place for academic year 2015-2015.

In a recent Survey 100% of pupils responded that they felt looked after at school and that they knew how to stay safe.

Every Monday morning all students begin the week with the Well-Being programmed. Each student will select a physical activity which they will follow for a term. The activities on the program promote increased alertness, concentration, confidence and develop their overall sense of wellbeing. Activities include Yoga, Capoeira and Tai Chi. Following this physical engagement all pupils will have a healthy relaxed breakfast.
