What is 16 plus?

The 16 plus department supports Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in Further and Higher education. This service is based at Oak Lodge School for Deaf Children in Balham.

16 plus offers-
Communication and tutorial support to students for Colleges and Universities based in London Boroughs of Wandsworth, Lambeth, Westminster, Merton.

Many of our deaf students are currently studying at:


South Thames College
Merton College
Lambeth College
Westminster College
St. Francis Xavier sixth form college.

Support is offered on all types of courses such as
NVQ
City and Guilds
GCSE
HND
Degree

Staff at 16 plus
We have a dedicated team of qualified
communicators
interpreters
notetakers
administrators
teachers of the deaf
teachers of sign language

How can we help you?

  • Communication support workers to provide sign language or notetaking for you in class
  • a tutor to give you individual tutorials and help with language
  • the loan of special equipment eg. Radio aids
  • access to Speech and Language Therapy
  • deaf awareness training to staff and students at college.

Applying for a course

You can contact Oak Lodge yourself and arrange a meeting with a tutor.
At the meeting you will be given advice about which courses would be suitable for you.
Also an assessment will be carried out to determine your support needs.
You then go to college and apply in the usual way.
16plus will contact the Learning Support Coordinator at the college.

OR

You apply to college for a course
The Learning Support Co-ordinator at the college will then refer you to 16 plus.
You will be invited to come to 16 plus for an interview and assessment.
If 16 plus can help with your needs, then a formal offer of support will be agreed with the college.
